General Information on Airplane Carry-On Baggage Regulations
A carry-on refers to the piece of luggage you are allowed to take on board. The following information is intended to help you gain a general overview of what items are permitted in your carry-on and on board, and what is not.
Additionally, we will provide tips on how to properly prepare for your departure and how to behave at the airport to ensure a quick and smooth check-in process.
General Information on Liquids in Carry-On Baggage (EU and USA), including Gels, Aerosols, and Similar Items
Liquids refer to anything that is in a liquid form. For example, creams, lotions, mixtures with solids, and even soft cheese and toothpaste are considered “liquids.”
Allowed in Airplane Carry-On Baggage:
- Due to security reasons, only a limited amount of liquids is allowed. A single liquid container must not exceed 100ml. All containers you carry must be placed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag with a maximum volume of 1 liter.
- Only one bag per passenger is allowed.
- All liquids must be shown at the security checkpoints (including medications and baby food).
- Medications and baby food are usually allowed. However, you must be able to justify their necessity. For example, for medication, you may need a doctor’s note.
- Liquids purchased after the security checkpoints (duty-free items with a receipt) can be carried on to other airports within the EU. However, these liquids must remain in the sealed bag from the shop or additionally in your 1-liter bag.
Not Allowed in Airplane Carry-On Baggage:
- Explosive substances
- Self-defense sprays
- Containers with gases
- Easily flammable substances
- Substances that produce flammable gases when in contact with liquids like water
- Oxidizing substances such as bleach powder
- Toxic and infectious substances of any kind
- Acids or other corrosive substances
- Radioactive substances
- Lighters (sometimes one lighter on your person is allowed)
Unsure About Bringing Certain Liquids?
Don’t worry! In case of doubt, the airport staff at the security checkpoint will decide whether a specific liquid is allowed in your carry-on. However, with proper preparation, you can save a lot of time and avoid frustration during the security checks. So, think about what you really need and what you don’t! If necessary, you can pack the liquid in your checked luggage.

Smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 are often not allowed on board or in checked luggage due to battery explosion and/or fire hazards.
